Part of the Vaucluse region in the northern part of Provence, wine growing has been recorded in Vacqueyras since the 15th century. Vacqueyras is in the southern Rhone valley and part of the Rhone wine growing region. It has received its own appellation in 1990. Before that it was considered part of the CdR (Cotes du Rhone) AOC.

Most of the wines in Vacqueyras are based on a Grenache blend and some Syrah. The better wines are expected to come from the Plateau de Garrigues.
